Best Fantasy Audio

The best fantasy audiobooks Reddit

By Tyler. Counted November 2026.

The best fantasy audiobooks Reddit recommends are Dungeon Crawler Carl, The First Law and Project Hail Mary, and that is counted rather than guessed: every comment in a selection of the popular best-audiobook threads on r/Fantasy and r/audiobooks over the last five years (2022 to 2026), the ones people turned up to answer, one count for each comment that names a series, with the thumbs up those comments earned (how this was counted). Below is the ranking, what rose and what held, the narrators people keep naming, my own take on each, and a link to every thread so you can read the arguments yourself.

Dungeon crawler Carl is easily the best read audiobook experience ever. a commenter

Really fun sci-fi/fantasy story elevated by the production team at Soundbooth and the multi-voice talents of Jeff Hayes. a commenter

My take. Agreed, loudly. Jeff Hays doing Princess Donut is the best comic performance in audio, and it is my top pick on the LitRPG page. It has my sixth star, the one I keep for the very best.

First Law Audiobooks are the best I’ve heard a commenter

My take. Agreed. Steven Pacey's Glokta is the performance everyone on these threads talks about, and it earns it. Five stars from me, and the trilogy is reviewed here.

Michael Kramer who narrate almost all of the Cosmere books by Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn, Stormlight Archive etc) is one of the best in the business. a commenter

How this was counted

I picked the popular threads on r/Fantasy and r/audiobooks asking for the best audiobooks over the last five years, 2022 to 2026, the ones with the most people answering rather than every thread ever posted, and read every comment in them. A comment counts once for each series it names, however many times it says the name, and a reply saying "this" counts for nothing. The thumbs up count too: each entry shows the upvotes on the comments that name it, the quoted lines come from the most upvoted of them, and when two series tie on comments the upvotes decide. A few of the r/audiobooks threads asked for the best audiobook of any kind rather than fantasy; from those, only the 153 comments naming a fantasy or science fiction series are counted, which is why Lonesome Dove isn't on this page, and each entry's Where line shows how many of its mentions came from them. Another 28 comments just said "anything by Sanderson", which I've left out of the list too. It is a sample, not a census, and a loud week can move a series a few places. Where I give my own rating, it is out of five stars, plus a sixth star I keep for the very best.

The threads

Read them yourself; the arguments in the replies are half the fun. Sorted by year.
