The most anticipated fantasy audiobooks of 2027
There is already a lot to look forward to in 2027. This is my guide to the upcoming fantasy audiobooks of 2027, the new releases and their release dates, sorted by how sure we can be. The firm dates come first, with the vague ones further down. Where a date is only a guess, I say so.
Everything here comes from what Audible, publishers and authors have said as of 31 October 2026. Audible dates move, so treat them as a guide. Titles link to the Audible page when there is one.
The Reddit threads on the most anticipated fantasy books of 2027 are about the books. This one is about the audiobooks: who is reading them, and when Audible says they land.
Dates from Audible or the publisher
A Court of Forgotten Melody (A Court of Thorns and Roses, Book 7)
Sarah J. Maas. Audible pre-order for 12 January 2027.
The seventh ACOTAR book, and the first big one of the year. No narrator is listed yet.
Lies Weeping (Chronicles of the Black Company)
Glen Cook. Audible listing for 11 February 2027.
Another Black Company entry. Audible does not list a narrator yet, and its numbering of these books is inconsistent.
The Grave of Perfection (The Tyrant Philosophers, Book 5)
Adrian Tchaikovsky. Narrated by David Thorpe. Audible pre-order for 11 February 2027. About 17 hours 30 minutes.
The fifth book in the Tyrant Philosophers series.
Odysseus Rising
Adrian Tchaikovsky. Narrated by Andy Serkis. Audible pre-order for 25 February 2027.
A new Tchaikovsky title with Andy Serkis reading it, which is reason enough to look twice.
The Eighth Face
Adrian Tchaikovsky. Narrated by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Audible listing for mid-March 2027 (16 to 18 March). About 17 hours.
Another new Tchaikovsky title, and this one is read by the author. Audible has two listings with slightly different details, so the date and length may shift.
Overworld
Will Wight. Narrated by Travis Baldree. Audible and the US publisher (Tor) give 23 March 2027. About 14 hours.
A standalone LitRPG about a royal butler called Eldric Altmoore. The date depends on where you look: Wight's own blog in April said April 2027, and some retailers list 6 April. Audible's date is the one I would plan around.
The Last Champion (Malazan Empire: Path to Ascendancy, Book 5)
Ian C. Esslemont. Audible pre-order for 1 April 2027.
This is a spin-off set in the Malazan world, separate from the main Book of the Fallen series. No narrator is listed yet. Malazan fans will want it.
Reap the Whirlwind (Academy of Outcasts, Book 3)
Larry Correia. Narrated by Garrett Michael Brown. Audible pre-order for 13 April 2027.
The third book in the Academy of Outcasts series.
Steel Rain (Alpha and Omega, Book 7)
Patricia Briggs. Audible listing for 20 April 2027, no narrator listed.
The seventh Alpha and Omega book.
The Heretics (The Devils, Book 2)
Joe Abercrombie. UK 4 May 2027 and US 11 May 2027, from the author's progress report. Narrator not listed yet. About 15 hours.
The sequel to The Devils, and the big one for Abercrombie fans. The dates come from the author's update as reported by a fan site, and Audible shows entries for both days with no narrator. Steven Pacey read the first book, but nothing says he is back for this one.
Last Metal Romance (Chronicles of the Black Company)
Glen Cook. Audible listing for 18 May 2027, no narrator listed.
The second of the two Black Company titles Audible has for 2027.
Shieldborn (Swordheart / World of the White Rat, Book 3)
T. Kingfisher. Audible listing for 24 August 2027, no narrator listed. About 15 hours.
The third book set in the World of the White Rat.
The Guerrilla Republic (The Decurion Saga, Book 2)
Richard Swan. Audible listing for 24 August 2027. About 12 hours 21 minutes.
The second Decurion Saga book.
Season only: the author says so
Songrise (Riftwake, Book 2)
Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson. The authors say summer 2027. No exact date.
The second Riftwake book follows Blightfall from this year. Sanderson has said summer 2027, but there is no date or Audible listing yet. The title Songrise comes from the Coppermind and Wikipedia, not from an Audible page, so treat the title as likely rather than certain.
Full-cast editions
Audible has three more full-cast Witcher editions on the way, listed at about 12 hours each. These are the Audible listings, not anything I have confirmed with the publisher.
- The Time of Contempt, 27 July 2027
- The Tower of Swallows, 24 August 2027
- The Lady of the Lake, 19 October 2027
There is also a dramatised Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, listed for 10 December 2027 as a full-cast production of about 11 hours.
Maybe, and I would not plan around them
These are books with a rumoured year or a date from a reader-driven list, with nothing firm from the author or publisher. I am including them because a lot of you are waiting, not because they are confirmed.
- Dungeon Crawler Carl, Book 9. No date. Matt Dinniman said at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026 that he doesn't have one, and that Books 9 and 10 are one story being split in two. 2027 is possible. My review of the series is here if you want to catch up first.
- Red God (Red Rising, Book 7). No date. Pierce Brown said in May 2025 that late 2026 was the earliest, and that has now passed with no Audible listing. If you haven't started, Red Rising is a good use of the wait.
- The Thorn of Emberlain (Gentleman Bastard, Book 4). Scott Lynch. A reader-driven list shows 13 January 2027, but I found no confirmation from the publisher. Treat it as a rumour.
- On the Road to Ruin (Glass Immortals, Book 2). Brian McClellan. A reader-driven list shows 25 May 2027, with no Audible listing yet.
- Untitled Cinder Spires Book 3. Jim Butcher. A reader list says 2027, nothing more.
- The Lord of Demons (The Burning, Book 3). Evan Winter. A reader list says 2027, nothing more.
- Keeper of the Lost Cities 10. Shannon Messenger. A reader list shows 9 September 2027, no Audible listing yet.
Two that are further off. Sanderson says Ghostbloods, the next Mistborn series, is December 2028. A fan-site projection has James Islington's The Justice of One probably in 2028. Neither is a 2027 book, but if you were hoping, now you know.
Fantasy on screen in 2027
A few big adaptations are on the way. If you like to hear the story first, here is what I would listen to before you watch.
- Harry Potter (HBO). Filming, with a premiere expected in early 2027, according to HBO's CEO. No exact date yet. Harry Potter on audiobook is the obvious thing to listen to first.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The film is dated for 17 December 2027. The Lord of the Rings is on the best fantasy series list.
- The Magician's Nephew (Netflix, directed by Greta Gerwig). Reported for 12 February 2027 in cinemas and 2 April on Netflix. I couldn't confirm those dates from a primary source, so treat them as reported rather than fixed.
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, season 2 (HBO). Season 1 aired in January 2026 and season 2 is expected in 2027. It is a spin-off from A Song of Ice and Fire, which is on the best fantasy series list.
- Dungeon Crawler Carl (Peacock). Greenlit for a live-action series, with Seth MacFarlane's company behind it and Matt Dinniman as an executive producer. There is no cast and no shoot date, so 2027 is not a safe bet. Jeff Hays's performance is a hard one to beat, so I would listen first.
- Mistborn (Apple TV film) and Stormlight. Both are in development at Apple, which took the Cosmere screen rights in January 2026. Sanderson finished a first screenplay draft for the Mistborn film in July and expects more revisions. There is no date, and I wouldn't count on anything in 2027. Start with Mistborn or The Stormlight Archive.
- Fourth Wing (Prime Video). Ordered to series in May 2026, with no production start or date.
Where to go next
If you want something to listen to while you wait, the short quiz picks a series for you, and my best fantasy series list has the ones I rate highest. I have a separate post on the big new releases of 2026.
