Double Threat. Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. The Storm Light Archive: The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance and Oathbringer – Get the first two free on Audible under trial!

Drop everything and go and get this audiobook. This is the best story I’ve heard in ages. Sanderson has created an amazing world, so richly detailed that I can visualise it easily even in all it’s weirdness. The Way of Kings is everything you could want in an epic fantasy audiobook, great world building, amazing characters, magic and mystery. There is almost never a dull moment, I honestly can’t believe this audiobook is 45 hours long because it just went so quickly. Sanderson doesn’t waste time getting bogged down in unnecessary details or sub-plots, he put in the exact amount that was needed to make a good story. The main sub-plots appear in the interludes and although brief, give us an idea that there is something mysterious going on and that everything is about to come to a head. This series has the longest audiobooks in the list and is great value when paired with the two free audiobooks under the audible trial.

MICHAEL KRAMER

MICHAEL KRAMER, BAD ASS AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Michael Kramer is an award winning American audiobook narrator. Kramer has recorded many fantasy audiobooks. The most notable series Kramer has narrated in the context of the best fantasy was probably considered ‘The Wheel of Time (WoT) Series’ until recently, i now think the Stormlight Archive edges out in front. This series is about as epic as epic fantasy audiobooks can get, and Kramer nails it.

With Kramers dramatization, rich character diversification and smooth crisp voice you will sink into this series like nothing else before. Also on the list is Kate Reading (Michaels wife). They make an awesome team.

The Stormlight Archive

The Way Of Kings (The Stormlight Archive book #1)

Widely acclaimed for his work completing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time saga, Brandon Sanderson now begins a grand cycle of his own, one every bit as ambitious and immersive.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Wars were fought for them, and won by them. One such war rages on the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where 10 armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.

Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan’s motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

There are three books in this series:

  1. The Way of Kings
  2. Words of Radiance
  3. Oath Bringer

STEPHEN FRY

STEPHEN FRY, THE BEST HARRY POTTER AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Stephen Fry, another English born man on the list. Fry is also comedian, actor, and writer. Fry’s greatest narrations are those of the Harry Potter series, like that of Jim Dale and there is obviously great debate of ‘who did it better’ (Fry did it better). I believe Fry is quite unique on this list in that I believe he adds the greatest amount of humour into the story comparatively – although Pacey does quite well arguably.

Fry shows a great deal of flexibility in his characters voices, for example in the Order of the Phoenix, after the events at the Ministry of Magic when Harry has a hissy fit in Dumbledores office, Fry’s ability to mimic a screaming 15 year old boy is impressive. Also, in the Half Blood Prince, when Ron takes a love potion, Fry adapts Ron’s voice to that of a high pitched, giggly, lovesick teenager- but still a voice that is recognisably Ron’s. It really is marvellous what Fry can do with his voice. Most of you are probably wondering what Fry’s choice of voice is for some of the more significant characters. Harry is of course, great. He doesn’t sound whiny or nasally. He sounds like a normal boy with some issues. Voldemort is 5 stars all round. He. Sounds. Evil. It’s great. From the way Voldemort is described in the books I expected a voice that was high, a little soft (sort of like a hiss) and very creepy. Fry’s impression of Voldemort is (I think) better. It’s cold and commanding, ruthless and cruel all at once.

The Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone (Book 1)

These books are pure magic and a benchmark in the genre. J.K. Rowling takes a classic idea of young children heading to boarding school, and put’s it on it’s head, generally we would expect all the exciting things to happen while on holiday – but not this time. The Harry Potter audiobooks series may have been written and narrated with children in mind, but that hasn’t stopped thousands of mums and dads giving the first book in the series a five star rating. Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone is an introduction into a world of of optimism and hope, where anything is possible. As a result, this book speaks to a younger audience naturally, however this is a must listen for everyone. How could you not want to live in a world like that?! The books are creative and fun.

Book List:

  1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
  2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

SIMON VANCE

SIMON VANCE, DUNE AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Simon Vance is a stage, TV and film actor who has narrated hundreds of audiobooks for which he has won multiple AudioFile Earphone Awards and Audie Awards. He has been selected as an AudioFile “Golden Voice.” Recently he narrated Hilary Mantel’s BRING UP THE BODIES, winner of the 2013 Audie Award for Literary Fiction. Formerly a BBC Radio newsreader in London, he now resides in Northern California.

The most notable series in my mind is Dune, albeit he does have an impressive list of works. Check out the best sellers.

NICK PODEHL

NICK PODEHL, KING KILLER CHRONICLES AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Nick Podehl is a professional voice actor. Podehl has narrated many fantasy titles. He has been given numerous awards including AudioFile’s Earphones Awards, Voice of the Year. He is very passionate about and committed to his work, and truly finds joy in his work.

Podehl has also narrated one of my favourite series – the King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. He did very well with this series, this was a very clear narration with high distinction between characters. There was a little dramatisation which was good, while not too much over the top exaggeration – very balanced. Highly recommend Podehl for all the best fantasy audiobooks he narrates!

The King Killer Chronicles

The Name of The Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles 1)

The Kingkiller Chronicles is a fantasy trilogy by Patrick Rothfuss, telling the autobiography of Kvothe, an adventurer and famous musician. The plot is divided into two different action threads: the present, where Kvothe tells the story of his life to Devan Lochees (known as Chronicler) in the main room of his inn, and Kvothe’s past, the story in question, which makes up the majority of the books. The present-day interludes are in the third person from the perspective of multiple characters, while the story of Kvothe’s life is told entirely in the first person from his own perspective.

STEVEN PACEY

STEVEN PACEY, THE PERFECT FIRST WORLD SERIES AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Steven Pacey is an English born actor and voice artist. For fantasy listening, especially that presented in a historical, yet paralleled time I believe the English accent really adds value.

Pacey is a real voice artist, and has the perfect amount of dramatization injected in to his narration. To further elaborate on this, his range and character diversification is just on point while at the same time he does not go over the top adding inflection where there should be none. Pacey’s diversification also translates well to a woman’s voice, and accents. I find quite often this is a major struggle. The female voices, are little more natural than most, quite often you get the high-pitched voice (I’m thinking of the Roy Dotrice, Feast for Crows – Daenerys disaster).

Pacey has narrated many fantasy books, and I believe the best are those he does from Joe Abercrombie’s, First Law, and the First Law World series. Both set in the same universe. These 6 books have a rating range of about 4.3 to 4.8 out of 5 on Audible, and are without a doubt, the best two series I have listened to, to date.

The First Law series

The Blade Itself (First Law Series book #1)

The First Law series for audiobook is one of the best epic fantasy series I’ve had the pleasure to listen to. These books are dark. Very dark. If your humor is as black as mine, and you don’t mind if a character gets an axe to the head occasionally, then this series is for you.

Book List:

  1. The Blade Itself
  2. Before They Are Hanged
  3. Last Argument of Kings

This series also has three standalone books which are also amazing, these being:

Best Served Cold is set in the same universe as the First Law series, roughly three years after the trilogy.

The Heroes focuses on a three-day battle set in the same world as the First Law trilogy, about eight years after events of the trilogy itself.

Red Country is set about thirteen years after the First Law trilogy and revolves around a youthful female protagonist who is hoping to bury her bloody past.

JAMES MARSTERS

JAMES (HARRY DRESDEN) MARSTERS, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

James Marsters is an American actor and musician. Marsters has narrated the whole Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, which are amazing, and very renowned.

James Marsters is something special. he has a huge theatre back ground which means he has the sheer stamina to do unabridged novels. He also had a fabulous voice.   His narrations are clear and clean with great pronunciation. I think his voice is suited to the contemporary audiobook – it may be the accent, but that’s just me

Marsters from what i hear has fantastic memory too, he remembers how he portrayed the characters from the earlier work, and his repetitions of characters flow nicely, it’s never fun as a listener to head to the next in the serise and find the characters have different voices. It’s clear that Marsters nails it,  he hit’s the right emotional mark for each passage.

The Dresden Files

Storm Front: The Dresden Files: Book 1

The books are written as a first person narrative from the perspective of the main character, private investigator and wizard Harry Dresden, as he recounts investigations into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago. Butcher’s original proposed title for the first novel was Semiautomagic, which sums up the series’ balance of fantasy and hard-boiled detective fiction.

There are fifteen books in this series:

  1. Storm Front
  2. Fool Moon
  3. Grave Peril
  4. Summer Knight
  5. Death Masks
  6. Blood Rites
  7. Dead Beat
  8. Proven Guilty
  9. White Night
  10. Small Favor
  11. Turn Coat
  12. Changes
  13. Ghost Story
  14. Cold Days
  15. Skin Game

LUKE DANIELS

LUKE DANIELS, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Luke Daniels was born into a family of actors. Both his father and mother have been performing and teaching for almost five decades. It is because of their influence that, from a very young age, Luke and his two brothers often found themselves in rehearsal halls at repertory theatres all over the country; watching innumerable productions of Much Ado, Julius Caesar, and Midsummer’s.

Luke Daniels has narrated over 250 audiobooks, has been the grateful recipient of thirteen AudioFile Earphones Awards, and has earned three Audie nominations. His background is in classical theater and film. Luke has performed at repertory theaters around the country, but now he resides in the Midwest with his pack.

Luke Daniels voice is extremely clear that has this growly inflection that jumps up at the end of each sentence. In short it’s a voice you can listen to for hours. Luke also manages to slip in humour to his narrations which is great, this is evidence in the Magic 2.0 series. All in all, Daneil’s provides for a fantastic listening experience in almost every occasion that is worth of the best fantasy audiobooks. Luke has narrated many popular audiobooks such as the Magic 2.0 series by Scott Meyer, Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne,  Frontlines series by Marko Kloos to name a few.

Off to be the Wizard

Off To Be The Wizard: Magic 2.0: Book 1

This audiobook is pretty short, so the story moves quickly. There was always a lot going on with some mind boggling theories thrown into the mix. Some of the time I was a bit confused about how the wizards were able to manipulate the ‘file’ and do the things they did, but it didn’t really matter. I treated it like maths. Accepted that I didn’t understand it and moved on. It was a very original, highly entertaining story. It was also very funny.

JIM DALE

JIM DALE, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

In the United States, Jim Dale is known as the “voice” of Harry Potter. He has recorded all seven books in the Harry Potter series as audiobooks, and as a narrator he has won two Grammy Awards (in 2001 and 2008) and received seven Grammy nominations and a record ten Audie Awards including “Audio Book of the Year 2004,” “Best Children’s Narrator 2001/2005/2007/2008,” “Best Children’s Audio Book 2005,” two Benjamin Franklin Awards from the Independent Book Publishers Association (one of these was in 2001 for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)and 23 Audio File Earphone Awards.

He narrates the Harry Potter video games and many of the interactive “extras” on the Harry Potter DVD releases. He also holds three Guinness World Records. One for occupying the first six places in the Top Ten Audio Books of America and Canada 2005.His second for creating 134 different voices for one audiobook, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. and his third for breaking his own record with 146 voices for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2007. Dale opened every episode of the ABC drama Pushing Daisies as the unseen narrator.

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter and The Sorcerors Stone

Harry Potter has no idea how famous he is. That’s because he’s being raised by his miserable aunt and uncle who are terrified Harry will learn that he’s really a wizard, just as his parents were. But everything changes when Harry is summoned to attend an infamous school for wizards, and he begins to discover some clues about his illustrious birthright. From the surprising way he is greeted by a lovable giant, to the unique curriculum and colorful faculty at his unusual school, Harry finds himself drawn deep inside a mystical world he never knew existed and closer to his own noble destiny.

KATE READING

KATE READING, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Kate Reading is the recipient of three AudioFile Earphones Awards, and has narrated everything from Patricia Cornwell to George Eliot. Her favorite BOT recordings include Like Water for ChocolateMiddlemarch, and Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Times series, which she narrated with her husband, Michael Kramer.

WIL WHEATON

WIL (SWEET WHEAT) WHEATON AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Wheaton has worked as a voice actor in animation, video games and audiobooks, beginning with the role of Martin Brisby in The Secret of NIMH at age 10. His most noteworthy credits include the roles of Aqualad in the cartoons Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go!, the voice of radio journalist Richard Burns in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Kyle in the Nickelodeon cartoon, Kyle + Rosemary as well as himself and various other characters on both Family Guy and Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy. Wheaton also featured as the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Dr. Peter Meechum in Generator Rex, Mike Morningstar / Darkstar in Ben 10: Alien Force, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien & Ben 10: Omniverse. Wheaton also took upon the anime roles of Yakumo in Kurokami: The Animation, Menma in Naruto, Hans in Slayers Evolution-R, Aaron Terzieff in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. He also appeared as himself in a skit on nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot’s 2008 album Final Boss attempting to be a rapper, whose rhymes only involved shellfish. Wheaton later collaborated with Frontalot on “Your Friend Wil”, a track from the 2010 album Zero Day on the subject of Wheaton’s law, which states “don’t be a dick” non-primary source needed] (the phrase was in use before Wheaton’s blog post). Wheaton and Frontalot have both appeared at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX).

Wheaton has also narrated a number of bestselling audiobooks, mostly in the science-fiction and fantasy category, including Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (Wheaton also exists in the novel’s universe, described as being joint President, along with Cory Doctorow, of the virtual world Oasis, which is the setting for much of the book), “Armada” also by Cline, Redshirts by John Scalzi, “Fuzzy Nation” also by Scalzi, and books 6–10 of the Chronicles of Amber series by Roger Zelazny.

Ready Player One

It’s the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. We’re out of oil. We’ve wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty, and disease are widespread. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And, like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who died with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS – and his massive fortune – will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late 20th century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle. Suddenly he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions – and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

Narrator Wil Wheaton is an American actor and writer best known for his role as Wesley Crusher in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation, and for playing Gordie Lachance in the film Stand By Me. More recently, he has appeared in several episodes of the TV series The Big Bang Theory as himself.

ROY DOTRICE

ROY DOTRICE, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Roy Dotrice, Born in 1923, is a British Actor who fought in the second World War and spent four years in a German prisoner of war camp. Dotrice’s career is made up of 1,782 performances spanning several decades, subsequently earning him a place in the Guinness Book of Records for greatest number of solo performances in a play. His narration of the Game of Thrones series earned him a second place in the Guinness Book of Records for creating the largest number of characters voiced in an audiobook. He managed to voice 224 different characters. Dotrice’s favourite character to voice is Tyrion and claimed that he managed to keep up with all the different voices he created by keeping a cheat sheet as well as listening to his previous interpretations of the characters. Dotrice’s range of voices and accents is impressive. Each character is easily distinguishable and perfectly represented. Although Dotrice does fall a little into the love/hate category, Game of Thrones has been the only fantasy audiobook series he has narrated to date.

A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones

I really love the Game of Thrones audiobooks. Lots of people do. Of course epic fantasy will never be a ‘one size fits all’ genre, but there is no harm in at least giving these audiobooks a try. The twists and turns in the storyline, even though I knew what was going to happen, that didn’t stop the plot twists having any effect! People will often listen to their favourite audiobooks over and over again because they continue to have an effect on them. Game of Thrones is like that, knowing the plot doesn’t take any of the excitement away.

There are only little hints of magic in Game of Thrones which adds flavor to the story and reminds us that this is in fact a fantasy novel. The dire-wolves I especially liked, although Johns albino wolf is slightly too convenient. The hints of prophecy and visions are interesting too, but the presence of magic in the story is so slight it can’t be easily used to help a struggling character out.

The opening is also great. Personally I really love it when an author drops in a little ‘prologue’ just to give you a taste of what’s in store. Well thought out and beautifully read by Roy Dotrice, the scenes and characters are incredibly easy to visualize. Not to mention the opening is a tad creepy, so bonus points there.

SEAN BARRET

SEAN BARRET, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Sean Barrett is an English actor, well known for his excellent narration of crime novels. Although Barrett mainly narrates crime fiction, he does dabble in the realm of fantasy. Barrett’s low, gritty tones are perfect for the bloodthirsty and rugged universes of fantasy novels. He also does a fabulous Scottish accent. Barrett becomes deeply involved in the story he tells, racing along with the action and emphasising the excitement of a scene.

Barrett is highly regarded amongst voice actors and the majority of the books he reads are rated very highly, particularly the fantasy novels. The best sellers below are all part of an amazing epic fantasy series, which are highly rated, and a must listen!

Iron Age

Age of Iron: Iron Age (Book1)

Age of Iron pulls you in from the beginning with a battle and doesn’t let go until Sean Barrett utters the final word. I especially loved the opening which makes the audiobook seem like an account of true events. In a word: intense. Whenever I thought that the story had calmed down for a bit, there would be a spanner thrown in the works and everything would fall apart. I loved this. It kept me interested, it kept the story moving and i certainly wasn’t expecting some of the plot twists. A round of applause to Watson who has managed to create some amazing fight scenes and some unique trials for the characters to face. There were so many things that I just didn’t see coming and I was kept guessing most of the way through. I loved the action and I loved the characters.

ROBERT INGLIS

ROBERT INGLIS, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Robert Inglis is an actor, writer, journalist, critic and producer. In the 1970/80s, Rob wrote, produced and acted in the one-man dramatisation of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, which were award winning. This flowed into the very successful audiobook narrations of the same titles in the early 90s.

Rob strikes the perfect note in his narrations; again, his voice is suited towards the old fashioned narration. Robs versions of the Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit are a little more read than dramatised, but the character range is definitely amazing in the Lord of the Rings.

Some people can find Rob a little dry, but I find this was mainly due to the books rather than the narrator. I think if you are looking for a narrator to read you the Tolkien classics, you have no better choice than Rob.

The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings (I, II & III)

The Lord of the Rings is regarded as some of the best books ever written, beginning innocently and then taking a plunge into a much darker world. The Fellowship gives us a glimpse into the intricate and beautifully crafted world that is Middle Earth.

There are three books in this series:

    1. The Fellowship Of The Ring
    2. The Two Towers
    3. The Return Of The King

SIMON PREBBLE

SIMON PREBBLE, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Simon Prebble is an actor and narrator, born in the UK. Prebble brings a distinct classy touch to every audiobook. Simon is very articulate and clear narrator, but definitely falls in ‘reader’ category, with lack of dramatization. Not to say this is a negative point, but definitely a point of difference – this often is a preference thing.

From the outset of a Prebble narration you know it’s going to be good, his wit, superior narrative and crisp distinction of characters take full control. His distinction is often portrayed through tone, rather than through all aspects of characterisation.

RUPERT DEGAS

RUPERT DEGAS, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

Rupert Joel Degas  is an English actor. You can see a bit of a trend here with the sheer amount of UK born narrators. Degas has narrated many great sci-fi and fantasy series including; the Time Keeper Trilogy, and the Name of the Wind Series, which are in my mind, instant classics in this space.

Degas, like many in this list have great range, his characters voices are well developed are very clear – you definitely know the perspective. Further to this he does a great female voice, which is a positive, it isn’t extremely forced, so you don’t tend to focus on it – you can just enjoy the story.

His skills subtly extend into dramatisation, however for the most part Degas is of the reader type. Degas has quite an impressive narrators voice, out of character dialogue. His tone, inflection and pronunciation are so crisp.

The Kingkiller Chronicles

The Name of The Wind – King Killer Chronicles

The Kingkiller Chronicles is a fantasy trilogy by Patrick Rothfuss, telling the autobiography of Kvothe, an adventurer and famous musician. The plot is divided into two different action threads: the present, where Kvothe tells the story of his life to Devan Lochees (known as Chronicler) in the main room of his inn, and Kvothe’s past, the story in question, which makes up the majority of the books. 1. The Name Of The Wind
    2. The Wise Man’s Fear
    3. The Slow Regard of Silent Things: Kingkiller Chronicle (Book 2.5)
    4. The Doors of Stone (Not released)

GEORGE GUIDALL

GEORGE GUIDALL, AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR

George Guidall has narrated over 900 audiobooks in his time; he would have to be the most accomplished narrator on this list, although not the most famous. Guidall has narrated many Stephen King novels, such as the Gunslinger, and the Dark Tower series, which should speak additional volume – great narrators, read great books.

His versatility, range, and his ability to carry the listener off are tremendous. His character diversification is just as fantastic, and often has many accents in each book. Guidall’s pace between characters is often specialised, which adds additional value, there is no trouble differentiating between characters.

The Dark Tower Series

The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower Series (Book 1)

The Dark Tower is a series of books written by American author Stephen King, which incorporates themes from multiple genres, including fantasy, science fantasy, horror, and Western. It describes a “gunslinger” and his quest toward a tower, the nature of which is both physical and metaphorical.

There are eight books in this series:

  1. The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger
  2. The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three
  3. The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands
  4. The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass
  5. The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole
  6. The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla
  7. The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah
  8. The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower
