Best Fantasy Audio

The best LitRPG audiobooks Reddit Edition

By Tyler. Counted November 2026.

The LitRPG series Reddit recommends most are Dungeon Crawler Carl, He Who Fights with Monsters and Cradle, and that is counted rather than guessed: every comment in a selection of r/litrpg's busiest "what should I read next" and tier-list threads from the last three years (2024 to 2026), one count for each comment that names a series, with the thumbs up those comments earned (how this was counted). Those threads talk about the books in any form, so for each one I've added the audiobook facts: the first book, who reads it and how long it runs. Below is the ranking, my own take on each, who narrates the top twenty, and a link to every thread. Our own ranked list, with full write-ups, is the best LitRPG and progression series.

Oh my top two favorites are DCC and The Primal Hunter too! a commenter

I loved He Who Fights with Monsters and Dungeon Crawler Carl, but struggled through Primal Hunter's first two books. a commenter

My take. Agreed, and it isn't close. Jeff Hays doing Princess Donut is the best comic performance in audio. The first book has my sixth star, the one I keep for the very best, and it is my top pick on our LitRPG page.

I love hwfwm but i can see why some don't a commenter

If you loved He Who Fights with Monsters please read Perfect Run. a commenter

My take. Agreed, with the same caveat the thread gives. Jason is a lot, and Heath Miller plays him to the hilt. Seven books in, I have them at four to four and a half stars: great company, and I understand why some people bounce off.

Man I love Cradle so much. a commenter

If you dropped Cradle before Blackflame then give it another try, the first two books are okay at best. a commenter

My take. Agreed. Twelve books, five stars from me on every one, and Travis Baldree reads them all. If you have only heard Carl, this is where I'd go next.

The Perfect Run is a completed series, and it's quite good. a commenter

The perfect run is my favourite novel of all time, Hell difficulty tutorial is my favourite LitRPG. a commenter

My take. Not for me, and I know I'm in the minority here. Two stars: the time-loop idea is clever, but Ryan's jokes had worn thin for me by the midpoint. Plenty of people on these threads put it at the very top, so try the sample.

Primal Hunter is one of my favorites, though I confess that Villy makes the story for me. a commenter

My take. Agreed. Jake and Villy are the best double act in the genre after Carl and Donut, and it is Travis Baldree again. Five stars, and it's on our LitRPG page.

Biggest recommendation would be The Wandering Inn, but its one of the biggest "it gets way better, trust" situations of any series out there. a commenter

Wandering Inn is my all time favorite forever though. a commenter

My take. Partly heard. It's in my library and I haven't got far enough to rate it fairly; "it gets way better, trust" is exactly what everyone tells me. Andrea Parsneau is excellent on the early books.

My take. Agreed on the start. Four stars for the first book from me; I haven't pushed into the long cultivation stretch the thread warns about. Pavi Proczko narrates, and it's on our LitRPG page.

I vote for Iron prince, loved both books, though the second is quite controversial a commenter

My take. Agreed, loudly. Iron Prince has my sixth star, the one I keep for the very best: Rei's climb is earned the hard way, and Luke Daniels is superb. Only two books so far, and the second splits people.

I would highly recommend Heretical Fishing but if you didnt like Beware of Chicken not sure if it'll be your thing. a commenter

My take. Not for me. Two stars: I wanted more to happen than the farm let it, though Travis Baldree is as good as ever. If you like cosy, the threads say you'll love it.

If you want something that is an actual competed series though, Mother of learning and Mark of the fool are great! a commenter

The perfect run I'd say it's better than mother of learning but worse than DCC. a commenter

My take. Not heard yet. It's a time loop like The Perfect Run, which didn't land for me, but the threads treat it as a classic and it is a finished story, which counts for a lot in this genre.

Who narrates the top twenty

The narrators of the twenty first books above, from Audible. r/litrpg talks about the books more than the recordings, so few comments name a narrator at all: Jeff Hays in 10, Travis Baldree in 10, Soundbooth Theater (full cast) in 5. Our own list of readers is on the narrators page.

How this was counted

I picked the busy recommendation threads on r/litrpg from the last three years, 2024 to 2026: the tier lists and "what should I read next" posts with the most people answering, rather than every thread ever posted, and read every comment in them. A comment counts once for each series it names, however many times it says the name; the original poster's own tier list is not counted, only the replies. The thumbs up count too: each entry shows the upvotes on the comments that name it, the quoted lines come from the most upvoted of them, and when two series tie on comments the upvotes decide. Most of the comments are from 2026, so I haven't drawn year-by-year trends the way the fantasy Reddit Edition does; each entry's By year line shows the raw counts. Those threads recommend the books in whatever form people read them, so the first book, narrator and length on each entry come from Audible, not from the comments. It is a sample, not a census, and a loud week can move a series a few places. Where I give my own rating, it is out of five stars, plus a sixth star I keep for the very best.

The threads

Read them yourself; the arguments in the replies are half the fun. Sorted by year.
